Bondar
2019 Rayner Vineyard Shiraz
BLEND | 100% Shiraz
VINEYARDS | Two blocks of the oldest vines on the estate Rayner Vineyard, planted in 1950. The two blocks that make up the blend have quite different soils - 75% of the wine comes from Block 24 which is planted in deep sandy soils with ironstone rocks (dry farmed). This portion gives wonderful fragrance and an elegant structure. 25% of the blend comes from Block 1, planted on shallow clay over a limestone base. This portion gives the bones, the structure around the prettier and fleshier sandy portion.
WINEMAKING | Hand-picked fruit, wild yeast ferment, 2 weeks on skins. About 20% whole bunches. 20 months aging in mostly used French hogsheads (with 5% new oak as part of the final blend).
TASTING NOTES |
A very smooth rendition of full-bodied, big-flavored McLaren Vale shiraz, delivered with a silky touch. Perfectly balanced with soft fine acidity - spice, dark berries, brambles, raspberry, vanilla, black cherry, toffee.
